TMT, a specialist in construction projects for the commercial sector, were appointed by LSE, a leading online retailer of light fittings and bulbs, as main contractor for their new distribution centre in Irlam, Manchester.
LSE supplies lighting solutions for the home through online shops and trade customers. Established in Manchester in 2009, they fulfil more than 1,000,000 orders a year with the business experiencing strong growth and been recognised as one of the fastest growing companies in the UK over the last three years. To support their continued growth, they recently acquired a 12,500 m2 distribution centre.
The client required a storage solution that would allow them to store their current products, but also gave them flexibility for future expansion, alongside mezzanine floors to allow them additional office space. Quickline proposed a racking system that allowed for 24,000 pallet bays, a warehouse mezzanine covering 450 m2 and an office mezzanine of 155 m2, with James Cordingley, TMT Director, saying “during the tender process, it became evident that Quickline had a lot of knowledge and expertise in their field, they were happy to help with changes on the design and the designs came through quickly”.
There was a tight installation period, with the entire project to be completed within 15 weeks and no scope for change. To ensure smooth delivery, the installation team worked 7 days a week on an extended shift pattern. Quickline, working alongside electrical and mechanical subcontractors, reacted quickly and efficiently to minor client led changes to deliver the storage system within schedule, with James adding, “the onsite team were really slick and the installation process went well. There were no instances on site with near misses so the installation was great.”
David Gutfreund, Managing Director of LSE, commented, “Through a competitive tendering process the team at Quickline won the business to supply and install the racking for 24,000 high bay pallets in our new FC in Greater Manchester. Against a short run in time and program they delivered ahead of schedule and on budget.’
The project has given the customer the space they need to fulfil their growth, whilst allowing them the flexibility to future proof and the business continues to expand.
